Navaratri vrat
- by Anupam Varma (Sep 28, 2022)
Friends, wanted to write and share something with you all.. just random thoughts.. I think I have one to many of those... but sometimes I like to share too... this is not a perfectly formed write up or something, but just one of my brainwaves.. from a few years ago and I have come to only believe it more firmly in it, as each year passes twice through the navratri period. Some of you may recall that I used to disappear from all whatsapp every 3 months or so, for a couple of weeks... it was for similar reason. So here goes...
Equinoxes and Solistices both have a lot of importance in Sanatan mythology. Obvioulsy our ancestors observed the change in seasons, the behaviour of plants and animals around them start to change, and their crops start to change. But its hardly just the primitive or rustic simplicity that is remarkable. How did they figure out a span of time when to observe the key things like days of navaratri? How were they so accurate about the timing when the season changes and when to observe these. As we know with science today, we can understand equinoxes and solistices now, but how did they know? I mean think about it. Did they know that it is earth's axis of rotation is actually tilted as compared to the plane perpendicular to the earths plane of revolution by 23.5 degrees that would cause seasons to begin on the pratipada of Ashwin or Chaitra? Why is it that they typically end up falling around 22 September and March 20? yes yes, there is a variability due to lunar and solar calendar, but even they have an uncanny ratio turning into the same 365 day year with a 13th month adjustment every 32.5 months. And how did they know to map out the sunset constellation (nakshatra) to come up with Surya siddhatna etc... also, how did they know that earth's orbit is an ellipse? its mind boggling, especially to think that it was done in ancient times and is still valid. Well.. anyway, coming back to the point about equinoxes.
During Solstices, the days are either longest (Jun 22nd ish) or nights are longest (Dec 22nd ish). Also since apogee and perigee days (or apehelion and perihelion days) arent too far off from Solstices, you can say that the earth is either fartheest from the sun (Jul 4ish) or nearest to the sun (Jan 4ish)..
But when you look at equinoxes however (Mar 22ish, Sep 22ish) the day and nights are the same length and the earth is neither too far from the sun, nor too close, but on its average distance. The days are neither too long nor too short. It is neither too hot, not too cold. Neither too bright nor too dark, Neither too much Rajas (Rajo guna) nor too much Tamas (Tamo guna). Neither too much dopamine nor too much melatonin in the body due to that. A perfect balance.... a perfect time to reset your body! Yes, I am talking about the time to do vrat and break the bodies habits and get the insides moving, refreshed and overhauled.
Yes, it is just the perfect time to do vrat, a 9 day vrat during this time. You body will get rid of a lot of toxins if you do this right and observe it like it was meant to be. You will reset your body clock at the safest and least risky time of the year. Twice.
Yes, I am observing a 9 day vrat. These days you can give it a fancy name and call it a Paleo vegetarian Intermittent fasting... LOL.. .no seriously, that is exactly what it is! If done right the way it was meant to be thousands of years back, You wont eat meat, you wont eat processed food, you wont eat grains like wheat, you would eat selectively and you wouldnt eat anything other than fruit and milk products during the day and Tinni ka chawal during the night.. ho gaya vegetatian, ho gaya Paleo, ho gaya intermittent... chalo, coming back to main point I really recommend all to observe a 9 day vrat if possible. I am eating only fruits and milk stuff during the day and things like a cut of sabudana aur tinni ke chawal ki khichdi with aalo... and no salt except those naturally occuring like sendha namak... karo karo bhaiyon... last time I did that I had my energy levels skyrocketing by the end of 9 days and it was so much fun. First few days will be difficult but then its fun.
Here is where I am at this time (Baseline 9/26 9pm)
Day 1: Starting weight 178lbs, Avg Resting heartrate 68, Avg Walking heartrate 106, SPO2 96%, BP and Glucose levels normal, no meds, energy levels 6/10.
Day 2: 177lbs, Avg Resting heartrate 67, Avg Walking heartrate 90, SPO2 97%, BP, Glucose levels normal, no meds, energy 5/10
Day 3: 174lbs, 65 resting rate, 93 walking, SPO2 98%, BP Glucose normal, no meds, energy 6/10
